The game is a street racing game with customizable vehicles to avoid police roadblocks.
Gamers must compete in "underground races" (which is considered the game's story mode; nowadays it is "event car races") and "car series" (in which only certain cars can participate and win and receive in-game rewards). Also, players can participate in time-limited special events where players will be rented special cars to use in Story Mode. If all events in Story Mode are completed before time runs out, the player will be able to keep the rental car as a bonus for completion.
All cars in the game can be upgraded with engines, turbochargers, transmissions, wheels, ECUs and nitrous to make performance improvements in addition to performance enhancements.
