Evony is set in a persistent world in medieval times, where players take on the role of the lord or lady of a city or alliance. New players are given 'newbie protection', which prevents other players from attacking their city for a total of 7 days or until the player has upgraded the town hall to level 5 or higher. This gives new players a chance to build up some resources and troops and get used to the game before other players attack them.
The player sets the tax rate, produces and builds. Resources in the game are gold, food, wood, stone and iron, as well as the city's idle population. As in similar games, players begin by increasing the city's population and hourly resource productivity, as well as constructing certain buildings in the city, and then begin building their city's resource fields and building armies. Armies can include siege machines such as crossbows, catapults and siege mallets, as well as infantry such as archers, warriors and swordsmen.
All items in Evony must be purchased with gems, which can be bought with real money, through the in-game item shop or won on the steering wheel. Some items will accelerate the player's progress through the game. Winning items in battle is the main way to gain resources and cities.
